June 1, 1888 – George Vanderbilt purchases 661 parcels of land. This is the first of the total 125,000-acre estate comprising Biltmore Estate in Asheville.
June 2, 1802 – A plan of slave uprising occurred in Bertie County, creating a panic. When caught, 11 slaves were executed.
June 3, 1867 – President Andrew Johnson arrives in Raleigh to unveil the monument honoring his father, Jacob Johnson in the Old City Cemetery.
June 4, 1918 – All Germen women in the City of Raleigh were required to register at the Police Department no later than June 26.
June 5, 1949 – Motor vehicles registration in North Carolina reached 900,300 as of this date.
June 6, 1931 – The first Walgreen’s Drug Store opens in Charlotte with great fanfare.
June 7, 1929 – After a standoff by strikers in Gastonia, Chief of Police O. F. Aderholt was shot dead. Seven strike leaders were found guilty of murder and were to spend the next 20 years behind bars. They posted bail and skipped the country.
